The following review was submitted on NextDoor by a friend. Because of HIS experience, I will never shop at Rutherford's Produce (and apparently, based on the responses by other readers, neither will they). Here is the original complaint (below). Unacceptable.
Horrible experience at Al Retherfords, Market St, Camp Hill.
I had a horrible experience this afternoon at Al Retherford with one of the staff/owner there. This was my first time going to them and wanted to buy some mums/pumpkins for the season. (I always buy at local farms, just never from here before).
First off they are positioned oddly with no clear parking spot but I still decided to stop by. Off the bat, one of the guys - seemingly disinterested to sell, said “each pumpkin is a different price” giving me no reference to any price. Nothing is written up front and they have 100’s of different kinds.
Felt awkward to ask individual prices so just settled on buying 2 of what they call “big mums” (they were small mums and you can get them a lot cheaper at other farms - so save your money here). It was so awkward, I must have not spent more than 10 minutes there.
Just before finalizing, I found out that they only accept cash and no cards. That was my bad, I should have asked right from the get go. After learning that I did not have cash, that same guy got really angry at me and screamed saying “People coming into this country need to learn our rules and learn how to live here because this is America!” (He literally screamed at me).
To give you a scenario, I was all by myself with my kids who were in a stroller. They had to look at him scream at me like that and got very upset. I didn’t have the nerve to say anything because I just wanted to take my kids away safely. He seemed very agitated at the fact that I could not purchase because of lack of cash.
I spent hours replaying the scenario in my head and just could not find a reason that would warrant such disrespect and insult. I have never had an experience anywhere close like this in my years of living in this area.
I will still continue shop local because that’s what we were taught growing up. My business just wouldn’t go to them here. If you are thinking of stopping by here, I hope you get to read my experience before going there.
