Mr. Fadavi of Advance A&C Services arrived this morning within the time frame he suggested beforehand and brought my new dishwasher into the kitchen. Before removing the old machine, he looked in the cupboard under the sink (which I had cleared of all trays and bottles) and complained that there was no water shutoff. He thought I might have to turn off the water to the whole house. I looked under the sink and showed him the single tap that shut off the copper pipe that ran under the kitchen counter to the dishwasher space. It was in plain sight, -- so that made me wonder how much experience he had with dishwasher installation in North Shore houses.
Mr. Fadavi then took out the old dishwasher and called me to look at the water line and electric cable. He pointed out that the water line needed an adapter and the 14/2 electric cable needed to be connected in a special Bosch box to a new plug-in part. He showed me where he would install that box on the back wall of the dishwasher space, about 1' from where the electric cable came up through the floor. He told me the price for each part and I authorized the installation.
All this work was completed in one hour and then Mr. Fadavi tried to put the new dishwasher under the counter. It wouldn't fit, obviously because he had run the electric cable over the surface of the tile flooring to reach the new Bosch box and it reduced the vertical space for the dishwasher by ¼". With the old dishwasher, that had never been a problem because the cable ran straight up through a hole in the tile floor and connected inside the dishwasher itself. Had Mr. Fadavi measured the space when he arrived, he would have realized he couldn't run anything over the floor's surface that would reduce the vertical space.
At this point, he seemed ready to give up so I suggested that if I were doing the installation, I would simply cut a groove in the 1/4" tile under the electric cable and imbed the wire in it. He then said, "I'm not a construction worker." I replied that drilling or cutting holes in a counter wall or floor wasn't construction work but was part of any appliance installation. (I wasn't asking him to construct or remove anything!)
Mr. Fadavi stomped off to his truck without saying anything more and got the necessary tool. The job was finished in another 15 minutes and he told me he would have to charge extra for cutting the groove in the tile. He said, "How much are you willing to pay for that work." What an unprofessional thing to say! I replied that I was unwilling to pay anything extra because cutting a groove to hide a wire was just installation work. He then made out a bill without that added charge and I paid him by cheque ($330.75) since he wouldn't allow me to use my credit card (another negative against his company).
After testing the new dishwasher, he began to tidy up but didn't even have a vacuum cleaner with him. He had to borrow our good carpet vacuum to remove the tile dust and dirt he had created.
I've rarely met an appliance installer so surly and unreasonable. I question his knowledge and competence. I'm sure you can find better in Greater Vancouver.
