Re: Dr Karim Somani, general surgeon in Brockville.

**********************
I think I must of interrupted Dr Somani conducting a self colonoscopy procedure and something was still lodged in his anus!

I was told the receptionist is his girlfriend.
I don’t know if that is true but might explain his “macho man” exhibition to impress her?

**********************
He may be an excellent general surgeon, I will not know.

Perhaps, he was having a bad day but that does not excuse his rude and condescending attitude!

However, he is definitely not lacking in self and ego! Unprofessional comments regarding a retired colleague!

Regarding Dr Somani.
Arrogant and demeaning attitude!

I have since used the internet to seek the answer to my question below.

Question?

Is the current standard for a follow up colonoscopy to wait ten years after a colonoscopy that showed no signs of cancer? In Ontario.

As previously stated I found the answer on line.

But I was still concerned since I had two cancerous polyps removed.

Today: March 27, 2024

I found Dr Somani to be very confrontational when he came to the front desk right from the very start.

In 2016 , I had two very cancerous polyps removed by my then general surgeon who has retired.

A follow up colonoscopy within 6 months was fine as was the colonoscopy done a year later and the last one done 3 years after.

My surgeon at the time said to wait 5 years. (Dr Redmond)

He has since retired. At that time my surgeon may have been going by the standard wait time back before 2019.

I saw another surgeon, Dr Somani in Brockville on April 5, 2023. I called his office in Sept of 2023 and was told I would be lucky to have it done in 2024.

I went to his office today and he was very unprofessional when I asked how much longer I would have to wait.

He had come to the front desk from the back when I simply was asking about the wait time.

I could tell by his entry to the front desk he was going to be confrontational by his walk and facial expression. And I was right!
I think I must of interrupted a self colonoscopy procedure and something was still lodged in his anus!

He stated that my previous surgeon was entirely wrong when he said to wait five years.

When I asked this surgeon, Dr Somani, why he did not state the waiting standard when I first met with him, he stated why didn’t I ask. I would think it was his responsibility to inform me!

My understanding of the five year wait was due to my long ago conversation with Dr Redmond. This was prior to 2020 when Dr Redmond told me the five year period, so obviously things have changed but Dr Somani to be so negative and condescending toward a retired colleague seems to be most inappropriate!

When I commented that he was unprofessional speaking about a fellow retired colleague he then stated the standard wait time is TEN years! He stated my previous surgeon was wrong and said my previous surgeon did unwarranted follow up colonoscopies. Again, unprofessional. Twice he stated Dr Redmond was wrong.

Was the five year wait true at that time?
He went on to say he triages his patients and that he didn’t know when I would be done, again saying ten years after my last colonoscopy which I believe was 2019 or 2020.

Because of his arrogant nature when he asked in a derogatory tone if I wanted to stay on his wait list or cancel. I said cancel.

Very rude tone and of course I was not that pleasant after he belittled my previous surgeon.

*****

When I met with Dr Somani (April 5, 2023) and at the time told him why my physician referred me to him. I mentioned the five year wait my previous surgeon told me. At that time he could have mentioned the ten year wait but didn’t. However, this week his response when I questioned that, he firmly stated I should have asked?

Why would I?

Please keep in mind he meets wth hundreds of patients and cannot possibly remember our particular meeting while I only met with him, so my memory of the events may be much more relevant.
He was completely closed minded and argumentative which is why my anger rose!

But it was his unprofessional comments regarding my previous surgeon that I pointed out to him that enhanced his increase confrontational attitude toward me. He obviously didn’t like me pointing out his unprofessionalism in front of his two receptionists and the one waiting patient. Of course, he could have quite easily refrained from making those comments. (“Dr Redmond is wrong” twice and stating “Dr Redmond was known to conduct unwarranted colonoscopies”

This interaction took place with two female employees at the front desk and a male patient in the waiting area.

Completely inappropriate for this to take place. Why did he not simply invite me back to his office? Because he had lost it at that point!

He has hospital privileges and is on the Directors Board.

And my response to them:

Thank you for responding but keep in mind he is on your Directors Board and your suggestion to speak to Dr Somani directly indicates you did not fully comprehend or perhaps did not read the already interaction.

Dr. Karim Somani, President of the Medical Staff Association, at your hospital- president of medical staff association and he disparages a one time surgeon associated with the hospital? Wow!

As a Director, his conduct in his office is a reflection of your hospital. For him to make unprofessional comments regarding retired general surgeon, Dr Redmond indicated Brockville General places no concerns regarding his possible opinions of other staff at your hospital. So sad, to fear this man?
