Top 10 Jacksonville Attractions
The northern Florida city of Jacksonville is one of the best destinations for families, singles, and business travelers in the United States. The city has the largest land area of any other urban area in the contiguous U.S. The sprawling nature of the city allows for plenty of activities and wondrous sights to see.
1. St. John's Cathedral
The current incarnation of this Episcopal church was built in 1906, but the congregation of St. John's Cathedral can be dated to 1834. Two previous church buildings were destroyed in fires, the first during the American Civil War and the second during the Great Fire of 1901. The Gothic Revival style building welcomes visiting parishioners. Each Friday, the church hosts a cafe as well.
2. Kingsley Plantation
The 18th century plantation consists of a two-story main house, a two-story kitchen house, a barn, and 23 slave houses. Visitors can tour the grounds throughout the week and can enter the plantation on weekends by appointment.
3. Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens
Over 2,000 animals are highlighted by the Range of Jaguar. This exhibit is the largest jaguar exhibit in the country. A children's play area includes a petting zoo, hedge maze, and water park.
4. Fort Caroline
The first French Colony in North America was established at Fort Caroline. Visitors can go to the National Memorial where they can explore the Timucuan Preserve Visitor Center, the Spanish Pond, the Theodore Roosevelt Area, and the Ribault Monument.
5. Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville
MOCA has varying exhibitions that change every few weeks. The permanent collection includes works from contemporary artists like Alex Katz, James Rosenquist, and Robert Rauschenberg. The museum is open through 5 PM most nights and is closed on Mondays.
6. Jacksonville Beach
Thirty miles from the city center lies Jacksonville Beach. Part of the metro area, Jacksonville Beach is a beach community along the "First Coast" of Florida. Tourists can make a day trip to the area or can spend the entirety of their vacation along the Atlantic Coast.
7. Museum of Science and History
The most popular museum in Jacksonville, the Museum of Science and History includes a planetarium, aquatic exhibits, energy displays, details of the human body, and changing exhibits. MOSH is open daily.
8. Friendship Fountain
Arguably the most iconic symbol of Jacksonville, the Friendship Fountain is located near the Riverwalk at St. John's River Park.
9. Treaty Oak
Said by many to be the oldest living thing in the city, the Treaty Oak is located in Jacksonville's Southbank. The name derives from a story about a treaty signed between Spanish settlers and Native Americans, though it is thought that the tale is fictional.
10. Jacksonville Riverwalk
The St. John's River flows through Jacksonville. It is flanked by the Riverwalk, which includes walking/running trails, picnic areas, shops, diners, and the Jacksonville Maritime Museum.
