Top 10 San Francisco Attractions
San Francisco is not the largest city in California, in fact it is not even the largest city in the Bay Area - that would be San Jose. However, this West Coast metropolis is still one of the most famous and beloved destinations in the United States and the world due to its distinct, unmistakable character and its large number of world-class attractions concentrated within a relatively small area. These are ten of the best and most popular attractions in the City by the Bay.
Golden Gate Bridge
There are few landmarks more emblematic of a city than the Golden Gate Bridge is to San Fran. This iconic, 1.7 mile suspension bridge features both a pedestrian walkway and a bike path in addition to its heavily trafficked roadway. However you cross the bridge the span is worth crossing at least once while visiting SF.
Fisherman's Wharf
The Wharf is home to the bustling upscale marketplace known as Pier 39, as well as a number of independent merchants and the Wax Museum at Fisherman's Wharf.
Cable Cars
These days, most commuters in the area either use the fast, extensive BART system or buses to get around the city. However, there are several cable car routes still in operation, and this charming mode of transport remains hugely popular with visitors.
Chinatown
A number of American and world cities have Chinatown sections, but San Francisco's is the oldest and arguably most famous Chinatown in the country. This neighborhood is a must-visit for souvenir shopping and dining - preferably dim sum.
Union Square
Union Square has a unique urban feel of its own, and has the best shopping in the city with a variety of large department stores and other retail establishments.
Lombard Street
SF has its share of steep, hilly streets, but the angle of Lombard Street required a driving path with a series of sharp turns, which makes for a great photo if not an ideal driving experience.
Haight-Ashbury
The junction of Haight and Ashbury was the epicenter of the worldwide hippie movement in the late 1960s, and remains a focal point of the culture to this day.
Alcatraz
"The Rock" is home to one of the world's most famous prisons. Since the facility is no longer in operation, it is possible to explore the penal complex independently or with a guided tour.
The Exploratorium
Opened in 1969, the Exploratorium was the original interactive science museum, and remains one of the most enlightening and fun experiences in the area or anywhere.
The Presidio
This small park on the north edge of the peninsula was used for various military purposes for over two centuries ending in 1989, allows for fantastic views of the Golden Gate Bridge.
